I heard a prophetic teaching on cancer from a spiritual perspective just recently and although I thought it was well done, I was amazed that my own perspective was so different. I believe this is a good compliment to what’s already out there, although it goes in a slightly different direction.

This perspective came about from my meditation about my brother’s cancer. My brother who is only in his mid 30’s was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago. All of a sudden tumors started appearing on his body in the form of swollen lymph node glands. Over a period of just a few months he was losing about a half pound a day. The doctors recommended he immediately start receiving high levels of chemotherapy and full body irradiation in order to check the unwanted cell growth.

Here’s where the spiritual perspective came in. The problem with chemotherapy is that it will immediately curtail all the unwanted cell growth. In the process though, it does two terrible things, it kills good cells and it weakens the body’s immune system.

Now here’s the key. God has implemented an immune system in the human body that automatically regulates cell growth. Matter of fact at any given time, your body is making sure that cells that are growing out of control are eliminated or are held in check. This is the Lord’s built in self-defense mechanism for the body. So think about it, cancer is not about uncontrolled cell growth, what it really is about is a faulty immune system. For some reason, the immune system stops functioning and allows things that are detrimental to the body to proliferate or to grow. Unfortunately, when we administer chemotherapy to people, it kills all the bad cells, but the immune system is still faulty and now even weaker. The cell growth comes back with more power than ever before, and in many cases the person ends up dying quicker. So now when we look at the body of Christ and we see uncontrolled cell growth damaging the body, it’s one thing to manage the growth itself, quite another thing to investigate what is wrong with the immune system.

I believe the true immune system of the body of Christ is apostolic authority. Without apostolic authority all sorts of damaging cells are allowed to operate unchecked within the body. These cells are really teachings, concepts and ideas and not really people. The role of the apostolic then on a body wide level is 2 Timothy 4:2 NIV – Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage - with great patience and careful instruction.

A new apostolic authority is coming that the body so desperately needs that will correct or realign things that need to be adjusted, rebuke or remove things that don’t have any business being there and encourage or introduce what is lacking.

By the way, my brother never underwent chemotherapy. We began praying for his immune system and the Lord healed him. His immune system was restored and is now back up functioning normally and keeping uncontrolled cell growth in check.
